The “Goat Cook” is a way for Vincentians (people from the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines) to commune with family and friends. Everyone from your 100-year-old grandmother to your 2-year-old niece grabs their bath suit and head into the water. Meanwhile, some uncle is telling lies about his athletic prowess as the younger version of himself runs up and down the beach trying to kick a ball through a makeshift goal made from two twigs. Drinks flow, soca music blasts, and the aroma of goat water (goat soup) wafts through the air. The entire scene is full of love, family, and joy.

Born in Gibraltar to Vincentian parents, Damien Jackson came to photography late in life. His dad gave this self-taught photographer his first camera so he could capture important moments in his children’s lives. Growing up in a West Indian neighborhood in Brooklyn and then attending Fisk University, an HBCU in Nashville, TN, has given him a unique perspective of the Black experience. As a result, he tries to tell the very diverse and unique stories of Black and brown people in America and worldwide.
