My place: Barleycove, Co. Cork

– A poem by Michael Kelleher

I’m there in my mind,
feet firm on wet sand, to look
past Ireland’s teardrop.
Endless horizon,
gentle ocean, warm winds shape
inner harmony.
Salt air serenades,
it’s lilting tones like loved ones
lost some years ago.
Some lie down without
coffins in a shallow grave.
I hear others sing
lyrics of hope that
though not here I’ll still belong,
but from who knows where.
The chorus of love
settles my heart, the rhythm
at one with this place.
My spirits take seed,
scatter through the windswept dunes
to flower renewed.
Immeasurable
grains of sand ground my soul here
for eternity.

BIO: Michael Kelleher has lived in South Wales for 30 years. He wrote his first poem aged 70 and is often inspired by his roots in Cork City and West Cork, sometimes writing in the local dialect of his childhood. His maternal ancestors lived a few miles inland from this place, Ireland is not just a stunningly beautiful country with a long cultural tradition, it’s also both a place of great tragedy coupled with a strong sense of affinity stretching back generations.. Mike hopes that this is evident in his poem.

What’s more fascinating than reading about other lifestyles and landscapes?

DID YOU KNOW? Learning about other cultures, peoples, and places through travel opens our minds and empathy. Travel demonstrates how we as humans are so similar in so many ways. So whether you’re lucky enough to get out there yourself, or you’re looking for inspiration and connection, then think of us, share this website…and WRITE FOR US.

We’re scheduling monthly publications for the upcoming year and we want to hear from YOU! Ideally your work should be 750-1500 words with 3-5 good resolution photos or sketches.

Although there are no reading or submission fees, donations are greatly appreciated.

If you are looking for a developmental editor, check out how I can help your writing become what you aim for, building upon your skills and showing you patterns that might or might not like to continue using…

Let me know if you have any questions, cheers.

Donations really help. Wanderlust Journal is a free online resource for publishing and reading travel essays and photo-stories. Same for Substack. Pretty much for everything I do…! It’s lucky I live in a little caravan (Travel trailer to you) and enjoy nature more than shopping. Anyway, even if you can only give a little, it helps me do what I’m committed to doing, ever since a teenager, and that is documenting other lifestyles, cultures, experiences. Think of these projects next time you are able to give a little, thank you.

Wild Dog Press publishes a travel book once or twice a year. Please check out our authors, all have come from our writers on http://www.Wanderlust-Journal.com.

If you’d like to hear more travel stories, listen in to the podcast. We had an episode that had a range of excerpts today with a kayak from California to Hawaii, a solo biker in Iran, a couple of fellas in boxers, and more! Yes, a fun selection. We only do podcasts when we have something to share so don’t worry if you subscribe that you’ll be overwhelmed. It’s a rare treat to hear a conversation, excerpt or anecdote from my travels or yours.

Sarah Leamy (me) has over ten books published including Van Life, an award-winning travel memoir from months on the road with two dogs and a cat in a small and old Dodge half-ton van. You’ll find artwork, books, essays, cartoons, travel stories, short fiction and more on the website.
