The dust storm:
We were approaching our hotel at Stovepipe Wells when the sky darkened in the middle of the afternoon. At first, we weren’t sure why it was happening, then we realized a dust storm was blowing in. Soon our rental was getting battered by sand. It became dangerous to drive on, so we pulled to the side of the road to wait it out. Once it started to clear I got out to snap this photo. That’s a 3:30pm sun in Death Valley during a dust storm. At the hotel bar later that night our bartender told us it happens about once a month, and that she wasn’t as big a fan of them as we were.

Geraldine in the dunes:
The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes are two miles down the road from Stovepipe Wells. There were few other people around the morning we were hiking in it. At one point I veered away from her to climb a dune. At the top, I looked out to what appeared to be a post-apocalyptic scene. What looks like water in the upper left-hand corner is the sky.
